When shopping for a mattress, you’ll hear a lot about mattress comfort level, motion transfer, and firmness. But how do you decide which type of mattress is right for you, with so many to choose from? Once you’ve narrowed your selection to an inner-spring mattress, there are firm mattresses, cushioned, plush, and pillow top to choose from.

Firm

A firm mattress offers the best support. If you suffer from back pains, or prefer to sleep on your back, a firm mattress might be right for you. Firm mattresses come in a variety of budget levels and a variety of levels of quality. Price is not a good indication of the firmness of the mattress, though it may impact durability. The more you can afford, the longer your mattress should last. Firm mattresses have more, and thicker inner springs, offering the best support.

Cushion Firm

A “cushion firm” mattress has a padded covering that offers a layer of comfort over the innersprings. While all mattresses have a pad, a cushion firm, as the name implies, has a thicker pad, offering a greater feeling of softness and comfort while simultaneously maintaining a firm foundation and good support for your back and neck. This mattress is best for both back and side sleepers.

Plush

The pad on the plush style mattress is on one side only, and is significantly thicker than a cushion firm pad. Since a plush mattress can’t be flipped, only rotated from head to foot, it may not last as long as a cushion firm or firm mattress. A good quality plush mattress, however, will offer years of excellent comfort and is ideal for side sleepers and those who prefer sleeping on their stomach.

Pillow Top

A pillow top mattress offers the highest level of cushion over the inner springs. The thick pad may require fitted sheets with deeper pockets to accommodate the extra thickness. This type of mattress offers the highest softness level in an innerspring mattress, and offers a similar feeling to sleeping on memory foam without the heat retention.

FAQs

Mattress comfort level refers to how firm or soft a mattress feels. This can vary depending on the type of mattress and the materials used in its construction.
Determining your mattress comfort level is important to help ensure that you choose a mattress that provides the right level of support and comfort for your needs. Sleeping on a mattress that is too firm or too soft can lead to discomfort, pain, and poor sleep quality.
If you find that your mattress is too firm or too soft, you may be able to change the comfort level by adding a mattress topper or changing your bedding. However, if you consistently experience discomfort or pain, it may be time to consider purchasing a new mattress that provides the right level of support and comfort for your needs.
